Vyshyvanka is like a unique code of your region!

From time immemorial, the Ukrainian vyshyvanka served both as an ornament and a talisman, and also as a kind of document, by which it was possible to determine from which regions the owner of the vyshyvanka came from. Our ancestors believed that an embroidered shirt protects a person from evil thoughts and envious glances of bad people. This year, on May 19, Ukraine will celebrate Vyshyvanka Day – a symbol of belonging to the family and nation, which distinguishes Ukrainians in a multidimensional and globalized world.

Therefore, Ukrinform has prepared an infographic about the styles of embroidery in different regions of Ukraine.

There are many varieties of ornaments that were created over the centuries in Ukraine. The variety of Ukrainian embroideries is simply amazing. There is probably no other country on the world map that has such a multifaceted culture of embroidered clothing.

Vinnytsia region

In the Vinnytsia region, they were not limited in the color range. And on each shirt you can find the color that prevails in the patterns. Almost all performance techniques and styles of displaying elements were skillfully combined here: bottom, cross, embroidery with painting, carving; grid types. Individual ornaments of the composition were framed and connected with contour seams.

Volyn region

The shirts have clear, geometric patterns, and the simplicity of the composition adds elegance to the embroidered work. The white and gray cloth is embroidered with a red thread. Plant motifs are preferred in the south of the region.

Dnipropetrovsk region

The cuffs of the shirt sleeves and the neckline were embroidered with colored threads and black Plis. The men’s embroidered shirt was dominated by red and black colors.

Donetsk region

The combination of red and black was also loved here. Embroideries were decorated with netting and carving.

Zhytomyr region

Small cross and “understatement” – this is how they embroider in Zhytomyr region. Red with black or blue completely cover the sleeve of the shirt. The most common motif is a rosette and a rhythmic repetition of a simple pattern – broken lines, octagonal stars, rhombuses, etc.

Transcarpathian region

Here, the people did not limit themselves in the choice of colors, and the most common colors were still red and black. And they embroidered zigzag shapes, the so-called “doodles”. The shirt of this region can be found both embroidered only with white threads and multi-colored.

Zaporizhzhia region

The shirt was made in red and black colors, with a dominant red. The patterns were simple – large and geometric. Usually, the embroideries were decorated with plant motifs – flowers, viburnum, etc.

Ivano-Frankivsk region

The embroidery of this region is considered the richest in processing and execution. Different colors are used, as well as ornaments.

Kyiv region

In the Kyiv region, geometric patterns of plants were embroidered in white, coral-red, or black colors. Preference was given to white with splashes of green and red. Hops, stylized bunches of grapes, rhombuses, etc. were flaunted on the embroidery. Blue twisted cotton threads were used for embroidery in a certain period. But over time, they were replaced by black ones, since the blue ones shed quickly.

Kirovohrad region

The embroidery of the Kirovohrad region has very realistic ornaments, if a bunch of grapes was embroidered, then even the shine of grapes and thin tendrils were present. Red and black colors were loved here as well.

Luhansk region

The shirt, mostly of the Poltava type, was decorated on the lower edge with woven “net”. The peculiarity of embroidery is laid in multi-colored ornaments made with a small cross and half-cross, sometimes with a coarse thread. Geometric and plant-geometric patterns dominate. Here they boldly combined red with blue.

Lviv region

In this region, they like to combine several different patterns at once. Geometric ornaments are spilled on the white canvas, which give the clothes a casual, light look. To make the embroidered elements stand out and become voluminous, a blank canvas is left between the patterns.

Mykolaiv region

Shirts of different cuts had different necks – with a narrow or wide stand-up collar, with a lined collar, and others. Colors are red, black, and sometimes gray, gray-blue.

Odesa region

Traditional Odessa shirts from Pukhlyk were sewn from white cotton fabric. Puffer is a gathered fabric on the sleeve just below the shoulder. It is the puff that adds splendor and volume to the sleeves. The standing wide collar was densely gathered into small “wrinkles”, which were framed by a thin scar. Верхній край рукавів призбирували, а нижній вишивали геометричними рослинними візерунками в техніці хрестика. The main colors were mainly red, black, blue and yellow. The edges of the sleeves were finished with a narrow strip.
